Post Operative Instructions Following Repair Of Fractured Mandible

Post-operative care is important following surgery, and recovery may be delayed if this is neglected.

  1. Bleeding:
Light oozing is expected, as is salivary discolouration.
  2. Discomfort/Pain:
A prescription for analgesics will be provided. Take as directed. Discomfort should significantly decrease after 2–3 days, reducing the need for pain relief.
  3. Swelling:
Swelling is a normal response, usually peaking 24–48 hours after surgery. It may vary from side to side based on surgical difficulty. Swelling typically subsides 4–5 days post-op.
    • Apply ice packs frequently within the first 12 hours.
    • Mouth opening may be limited; this will ease as swelling reduces.
    • Bruising may occur as swelling resolves.
  4. Rest:
Bed rest is advised for at least 24 hours post-op.
  5. Diet:
A strict soft, non-chew diet must be followed for 6 weeks post-op.
  6. Oral Hygiene:
Good oral hygiene promotes healing and prevents infection.
    • Begin mouth rinsing after the first post-op day, 3 times daily for a week:
      a) Chlorhexidine 0.2% (e.g., Savacol, Oral B Plaqacide)
      b) Warm salt water (1 tsp salt in warm water)
    • Brush areas not involved in surgery.
    • Apply petroleum jelly (Vaseline) to lips for 2 days post-op.
  7. Stitches/Sutures:
Dissolving sutures are typically used and will fall out or dissolve within 1–2 weeks.
  8. Medications:
Antibiotics and pain relief will be prescribed. Take them as instructed.
  9. Other Activities:
Avoid driving or operating machinery for 24 hours (or longer if advised) after sedation/anaesthesia.
Avoid alcohol and smoking for at least 3 days post-surgery.
  10. Return to School/Work:
Advice will depend on the surgery type and your job. A medical certificate will be provided.
  11. Other Problems:
Difficulty swallowing, sore throat, or muscle pains may occur due to anaesthesia and should be temporary.
